July 6 Update from the FDA

Update from the FDA

With the health and safety of babies and families as our highest priority, we are saddened to hear that an additional case from May has been added to the investigation, while also relieved that there have been no new cases of infant botulism associated with this investigation in the past month.

As part of the root cause investigation, the California Department of Public Health collected leftover cans of Nara formula from two families affected by infant botulism. Today the FDA provided an update on their website that one of those opened cans tested positive for C. botulinum. We were informed that another open can tested negative.

Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) is now underway to help determine whether the genetic profile of the sample is associated with the strain identified in the patient. WGS does not determine the source of the contamination.

Additional testing is still in progress, including sealed cans of Nara formula.

In this complex and evolving situation, we are committed to working diligently alongside the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and state health departments to determine the root cause.
