A Note from Esther
To all Nara families,
I write this note to you as a mother first. Helping to feed your babies is my purpose and greatest joy. Since starting Nara, I’ve said over and over that we’re committed to doing the right thing, even if it’s the hard thing. That was true when it came to creating our infant formula, and it’s true now.
On Friday June 12 at 6 pm, our team received a phone call from the FDA. During that call, the FDA provided information about 3 cases of infant botulism in babies who the CDC reported had consumed Nara formula. Nara Organics formula has not tested positive for C. botulinum to date. We quickly decided to issue a voluntary recall of all our product in the market, out of abundance of caution. A full voluntary recall was the only possible choice for me, because your babies come first.
We have always been committed to rigorous testing. The International Commission on Microbiological Specifications on Food (ICMSF) recommends using SRC testing to screen for C. botulinum. Each batch of our formula is tested 3 times for SRC: Once on the powdered milk ingredients, once on the formula powder before canning, and once on the finished canned formula. At Nara, all our SRC test results have been at least 10x lower than the ICMSF specification.
We’re working closely with the FDA, the CDC, and state partners to determine the root cause. While we’re in the early stages of that process, my team and I are committed to keeping you updated. We’ll share information here and on our website as we have more details.
I will be in touch as soon as I can, as we work closely with government agencies. My heart is with you.
Yours,
Esther
