Have you spotted tiny dark specks in your formula? Here's what they are.

Have you ever opened a fresh can of formula and noticed tiny dark specks in the powder, or floating in a mixed bottle? Before you worry, here's what's actually going on.

They’re most likely caramelized particles. And they’re harmless.

Caramelized formula particles are tiny specks — black, gray, brown, tan, yellow, or orange — that occasionally form during the infant formula manufacturing process. They commonly appear in powdered milk products, including powdered infant formula, from heat exposure.

Here's the short version: turning liquid milk into powder requires heat. Most particles go through that process evenly. Occasionally, a small number get slightly more heat than others and that extra exposure causes them to darken, the same way sugar darkens when it caramelizes. The result is a tiny speck that looks different from the rest of the powder but is otherwise identical in every way that matters.

Does this affect the formula's safety or nutrition?

No. Caramelized particles don't change what's in the formula. The nutritional value is the same. The safety standards are exactly the same. What you're seeing is only a difference in appearance.

Nara is manufactured in Germany and is regulated by the EU and the FDA. Every batch is independently tested to EU standards before it ships to the U.S. Caramelized particles are a natural occurrence in powdered infant formula production, and even though they occasionally look funny, they’re not a safety concern.

Should I do anything differently if I spot these caramelized particles?

Nope, you don't need to do anything. You can continue preparing and feeding as normal.

We’re always here for you. If you’re feeling concerned, email us at hello@nara.com and we’re happy to help.

The bottom line

Dark specks in your formula are likely caramelized particles, a normal part of how powdered formula is made. You can use your Nara formula without concern, but always be in touch if you have questions.
